NEW YORK, October 23, 2025
CBS News and other local metropolitan stations covered a new groundbreaking technology advancement being implemented by the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). This innovative debut centered around new solar-powered, AI driven, smoke and brush fire detection cameras being installed throughout the NYC area. FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker touched on this achievement and stated, “These cameras serve as an early warning system capable of identifying smoke or flame activity in real time or high-risk areas.”
This solution and collaboration were initiated through a partnership with technology leader Abitronix. Claro, a leading AI Video Analytics company, and InVid Tech, a surveillance camera manufacturer, came together with Abitronix to design and deliver a self contained, solar powered, 5G network camera solution.
Abitronix CEO, Hugo Almeida stated, “FDNY has been leading in this realm and has been one of the first local government entities to embrace AI Video Analytic technology.”
“There is nothing greater than the capability of potentially saving lives as well as possibly millions of dollars in destruction caused by annual brush fires throughout the boroughs of NY by simply embedding AI technology into a video stream for detection and alerting” said Hugo.
Sadly, in Brooklyn just this past year, the FDNY Brush Fire Task Force had a record 51 brush fires. Thankfully, with this breakthrough, fire and smoke will be stopped before even gaining traction. So far, 8) AI cameras have been installed and are in operation, and there are future plans to expand the program more.
